AND WHO IS EYKE VOLKMER?
The German illustrator Eyke Volkmer was born in the 1930ies
in Istanbul, Turkey. When the WW2 broke out, he and his family
moved to Berlin before relocating to Bavaria towards
the end of the war.
After 1945, the family moved again, this time to Bremen. But
here again, there was no time to settle down: The family decided
to return to their beloved city Istanbul.
This time, Eyke Volkmer stayed behind. He went to Munich to
study graphic design. It was there that he met Herbert Lorenz
who asked him to help on the designs of book covers for the
publishing house Wilhelm Goldmann.
First, Volkmer created the blue and red covers of Goldmanns
"Zukunftsromane". Then he went on to the four coloured
"Goldmanns Weltraum Taschenbücher.
It was Wilhelm Goldmann himself who commented Volkmer's work:
"It doesn't look like that in outer space." He nevertheless
encouraged him to continue to work in his unique style. Goldmann
wanted his sf output to look different from that of the competitors.
After Volkmer had left the Atelier Lorenz, he continued to
work for Goldmann until he quit in the beginning of the seventies,
having created 162 covers in this and even more in other series
or for single publications.
Today, Eyke Volkmer lives in Munich and enjoys his life, occasional
travels to Istanbul and when he has visitors, he treats them
to some fine black Turkish tea. |

IST EIGENTLICH EYKE VOLKMER:
Der deutsche Illustrator Eyke Volkmer wurde in den 30er Jahren
in Istanbul geboren. Bei Ausbruch des 2. Weltkrieges zog die
Famile nach Berlin und Anfang der 40er nach Bayern.
Nach Kriegsende zog die Familie erneut um, diesmal nach Bremen.
Auch dort konnte Volkmer keine Wurzeln schlagen: Die Familie
beschloss nach Istanbul zurück zu kehren. Volkmer blieb
zurück und studierte in München Grafik Design.
Dort traf er auf Herbert Lorenz, für dessen Atelier Lorenz
er die ersten Umschläge für Goldmanns rot-blaue "Zukunftstromane"
gestaltete. Später gestaltete er die dann vierfarbigen
Umschläge der Reihe "Goldmanns Weltraum Taschenbücher".
Wilhelm Goldmann selbst kommentierte Volkmers Arbeiten: "So
sieht es aber im Weltraum nicht aus!" Und doch förderte
er dessen wieder- erkennbaren Stil, denn er wollte, dass sich
die Goldmann Reihe deutlich von denen der Konkurrenz unterschied.
Volkmer arbeitete bis Anfang der Siebziger für Goldmann
und gestaltete 162 der "Weltraumtaschenbücher"
sowie zahlreiche "Zukunftsromane" sowie Einzelpublikationen.
Heute lebt Volkmer in München, genießt das Leben,
fährt ab und an nach Istanbul und verwöhnt Gäste
mit gutem türkischen Tee. |
